Good SFX TV and Good/Bad/Ugly Movies

Most people are taken aback with the amount of movies that I consider good -- namely all of them. I've had to change the way I talk about movies with my friends as they have started looking at me funny when I tell them; "Yah, Lawnmower Man II was a good movie". For a while there I used to keep a log of all the movies I'd see, and then rate them top to bottom, which was better than which. And yet at the very bottom of the list, there would still be movies in a good category.

Well, most of my friends have given up asking my opinion of a movie, but from time to time they challenge me to name 10 good things about a movie. It's do-able. If you don't believe me, challenge me.

My last class I had to take before graduating from UCSC (BA in CS) was called The Theatre of the Monstrous; the Gothic Experience in Film. The last paper was a comparison and contrast between Christian Nyby's The Thing from Another World(1951) and John Carpenter's The Thing(1982). I wish I still had it around, it's the sort of useless text that the WWW is well used to.

• The lurker's guide to Babylon 5. In my humble opinion, this is yards and parsecs better than the stupid site the UPN provides. It's been around longer, has more information, work, sweat, love and thought than the real site. So much so I won't even provide a link to UPN's (you'll have to find it on your own). • I'm a big fan of the last 15 years of Hong Kong Cinema. The martial art's "kata" show-cases from the decades before this films are interesting at times, but the stuff that's come out in the last decade is really great stuff.

• No page about movies would be complete without a link to the Internet Movie Database. One of the things that amuses me is that I've seen a higher percentage of it's worst 100 movies than I have of it's best 250 movies.
